Stay connected more easily with the latest layout; in-line threads conversation for the new Spaces created in Google Chat.
Google Chat Space is the central place to communicate with a group of people or an organization about a topic, project, or shared interest. You can create a Space to discuss, share files, assign tasks, and stay connected within the same location. However, if you become a member of several Chat Spaces, it will be difficult to define which messages you should respond to. Especially, when there are plenty of chat conversations, causing you to fail to notice important topics.
Google realizes the situation. In October 2022, they announced an “in-line threads” feature in Chat Space to maximize users’ experience by organizing separate conversations to improve users’ interaction. Previously, it was the optional feature from the former one; “organize the conversation by topic”, which related messages and replies were grouped together in the main conversation window. Users have to choose between these two options based on their requirement.
Afterwards, they are aware that the majority of users prefer in-line threads. In addition, it might confuse them if there are two different alternatives to organize their Chat Spaces. So they decided to concentrate on the popular one. From now on, the recently created Chat Space will be in-line threads conversation. The other option, “Organize the conversation by topic” shall disappear when creating a new Space.

As per above picture, in-line threads looks well-organized, Space’s members can skim through conversation to understand the overview of discussion. Moreover, they can respond to any specific comments or discuss more details with in-line replies by creating a separate side panel from the main conversation. It won’t disrupt the flow of the main conversation in Space. So every team member can properly browse in Space and interact with their own topics.
Regarding the existing Spaces organized by conversation topic, it will be migrated to in-line threads conversation within this year. Google will update more information on their Workspace Updates blog and will send email to the primary admin in your domain for this change in advance.
